We Didn’t Buy Any Piece Of Land In Agatu – MACBAN

The Benue State coordinator of Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Garus Gololo, yesterday denied that Fulani herders purchased some parts of Agatu land for grazing.

Gololo said there was the need to correct the impression that herders in the state have paid money to acquire portions of land in Agatu against the backdrop of the just concluded peace brokered by governors of Benue and Nasarawa between Fulani and the Agatu people.

“It is not true that the Fulani herders paid any money to buy a piece of land from Agatu. I urge those politicians using the Agatu issue to fan the embers of crisis to desist,” he said.

He, however, added that the association would not hesitate to order for the arrest of any herder who flaunts the agreement entered by both parties in the interest of peaceful coexistence.

Also, the Minority Leader and Member representing Agatu Constiituecy in the Benue State House of Assembly, Alhaji Audu Sule, yesterday said that no part of Agatu land was ceded to Fulani herders for grazing.

Cry Wolf No More: Wolf Camera Shutters Final Stores

Final two Wolf Camera stores shutter

The last two remaining Wolf Camera stores closed earlier this week after struggling to remain relevant in a changing retail environment.  The two stores were once part of the Wolf / Ritz Camera company and were the only two that had remained in business following the company's 2012 bankruptcy.

The stores, located in Buckhead and Homewood, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, reportedly closed on Monday and Friday respectively without fanfare or liquidation sales according to sources.

The company distributed the following email to customers informing them of the closures and offering incentives for their online patronage:

Dear valued customer,

We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to you, our valued customer, for your support over the years at Wolf Camera & Image. In the past couple years, we’ve seen our online divisions, RitzCamera.com and RitzPix.com flourish, while our local stores in Homewood and Atlanta have struggled.

While it is with heavy hearts that we close these stores, we hope you will continue to experience great savings and service from our online divisions.

As our way of saying, “Thank You for your support,” please enjoy this exclusive promo code: WOLFLUV which can be used at checkout on RitzCamera.com for 10% savings.

We hope you will also check out our online imaging center at RitzPix.com!

Michael Roth, Managing Director for Ritz Camera told The Homewood Star yesterday that while the Homewood store "performed above average for its industry, the overall outlook for brick-and-mortar camera stores is not optimistic."  I was unable to find any current information on the health of the Buckhead store, but sources say it was targeted by criminals at least four times over the past few years including one break-in last year where a Dodge RAM truck was used to gain entry into the store.

Suffice it to say, the rash of break-ins paired with the rise of online shopping and advanced smart phone cameras, made the days of brick and mortar camera retailers numbered.  Wolf's Buckhead closure comes on the heels of the recent announcement that Showcase Photo & Video would be shuttering their Atlanta shop after 40 years in business.

Chuck Wolf's Photo Design Bar, a new business the Wolf Camera founder opened in north Buckhead in early 2014, remains in business.

The Homewood Wolf Camera, on 18th Street South, had about four years left on a five year lease but opted to buy out its lease early and close.  The property, located near the intersection of 18th Street and 28th Avenue was acquired, along with two other properties last month by a developer who plans to build new retail and restaurant properties as well as a large parking deck in their place.

The Buckhead Wolf Camera, located on Piedmont Road, about a block off of Peachtree, occupied a freestanding, 4,800 square foot building.  The property could be appealing as a restaurant but its ample parking is currently used (by agreement) as overflow parking for adjacent eatery, Red Pepper Taqueria in the evenings.

What would you like to see open in place of Wolf Camera in Buckhead?  Are you surprised Wolf Camera stayed in business as long as it did?  Have you become a patron of Chuck Wolf's Photo Design Bar?

Please share your thoughts below.

Chicken Salad Chick to Nest in Former Buckhead BBQ Joint

On the heels of yesterday's closure of 521 Kitchen & Que on Roswell Road in north Buckhead, I have now confirmed that Chicken Salad Chick will open in its place.

Opened in late 2014, 521 replaced Tin Drum Asiacafe (now Tin Drum Asian Kitchen), which had replaced Doc Greens Gourmet Salads.  Early last month, I revealed that the owners of 521, Drew and Roma Kirkland, had put the business up for sale (The restaurant's name related to the Kirkland's anniversary).  Yesterday, the restaurant distributed an update to members of its email list where they announced the business had sold:

Dear 521 Customers,

It is with bittersweet emotions, that we announce we have sold the business in North Buckhead and today's lunch was our last day of service.  We had an opportunity at the right time that just could not be passed up!

It has been a pleasure to serve our loyal customers and to share the passion we have for quality foods. We look forward to being a part of all of your dining experiences again soon.  Stay tuned for Chef Drew Kirkland's next ventures.

Sincerely, 521 Kitchen & Que

An existing franchise group of Auburn, AL based Chicken Salad Chick plans to open in the former 521 space later this Spring, marking the chain's first ITP location.  Chicken Salad Chick was started in 2008 by Stacy and her late husband Kevin Brown and currently has over 60 locations open with over 100 more "in development."

In Georgia, the chain operates about a dozen locations in such communities as Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Kennesaw, Peachtree City and Athens, among others.

Chicken Salad Chick's menu features 15 original chicken salad flavors, as well as gourmet soups, flavorful side salads and freshly-baked desserts.

As a company, Chicken Salad Chick restaurants primarily serve lunch and dinner and are closed on Sunday.

In 2015, Atlanta-based private equity firm Eagle Merchant Partners made an equity investment in Chicken Salad Chick. As a result of the deal, restaurant industry veteran Russ Umphenour became chairman of the board and Scott Deviney president and CEO of Chicken Salad Chick.   Umphenour and Deviney each have deep ties to Atlanta.   Umphenour was  CEO of Focus Brands (2008-2014) and before that, founder and CEO of RTM Restaurant Group, an Arby's franchisee with nearly 800 locations.  According to Umphenour's LinkedIn profile, he is also currently CEO of Atlanta-based Stevi B's Pizza Buffet and Managing Partner of 15C, LLC, a franchisee of Shane's Rib Shack restaurants in Georgia.  Deviney is the former CEO of SDZ, an Atlanta-based multi-unit Wendy's franchisee, and senior vice president with SunTrust Bank specializing in the restaurant industry.

Next Thursday, January 26th, Chicken Salad Chick will celebrate "Customer Appreciation Day" by offering one complimentary scoop of "Classic Carol" to all customers who visit their restaurants.

Are you excited for Chicken Salad Chick to be opening in Buckhead?  Have you been to Chicken Salad Chick before? If so, where?  What metro community should Chicken Salad Chick open in next?
